Should You Purchase an Older Mansfield Home?

While buying a brand new home is most people’s dream, the charm of an older home in an established neighborhood is very appealing to a lot of Mansfield, Texas homebuyers. In these pristine neighborhoods, you will often find sun-shaded streets that feature homes with wonderful, historic architecture.

Many of the homes in an older, well-established neighborhood may be renovated to include modern amenities while maintaining the original exterior and landscaping. Even though there are some definite advantages to purchasing an older home, there are also a few drawbacks.

The older home normally requires a certain level of maintenance. For example, wiring may need to be replaced, plumbing could need updating or the structure itself may need to have its foundation reinforced. Many older homes need to have new roofs installed and quite often water heaters, air conditioning systems and household appliances can be old and in need of repair or replacement.

Some older Mansfield homes for sale also contain lead paint which may need to be removed. Many older houses also are not all that energy efficient meaning that they quite often need new windows, insulation or duct work.

Even with all of drawbacks mentioned above, an older Mansfield house may still be a good thing for many home buyers. When looking at an older home, keep in mind that you may have to put some work into it.

Have the structure inspected by an experienced home inspector to be sure that there is nothing critically wrong with the home. Ask the current homeowner for all records of renovations and check to be sure that the repairs were done by a licensed contractor.
