Dallas-Fort Worth and the MetroMonitor
MetroMonitor, an industry tool created and maintained by the Brookings Institute, shows, in the organizations own words, “The MetroMonitor is a quarterly, interactive barometer of the health of America’s 100 largest metropolitan economies. It examines trends in metropolitan-level employment, output, and housing conditions to look “beneath the hood” of national economic statistics to portray the diverse metropolitan trajectories of recession and recovery across the country.
The aim of the MetroMonitor is to enhance understanding of the particular places and industries that drive national economic trends, and to promote public- and private-sector responses to the downturn that take into account metro areas’ unique starting points for eventual recovery.”
It is a great at-a-glance tool for viewing the economic condition of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The September 2009 report for example, the MetroMonitor showed that Dallas ranked near the top of the list for GMP (gross metropolitan product) and in the top 20 of the strongest-performing metropolitan economies in the country. The report also revealed that Dallas ranked high among metro areas with energy industries.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area also ranked well for the lowest house price change compared to the same period last year. The DFW area continues to perform well in practically all areas which is very good news when you consider the slowly recovering state of the national economy.
